[music] When I started in classical music, I was told that a lot of things about my Blackness needed to be checked at the door.
And for me, Emancipation was me going back and getting all of those things that I had to leave behind when I was younger.
It's about fighting for what really matters the most.
As Dr. King said, we die the day that we stop caring about the things that matter to us the most, right?

That for me, is what is important and what is necessary in the 21st century in the arts, particularly in a city like Chicago, that has birthed gospel music, that has birthed so much of jazz and blues, and has such a unique positioning in the story of Black music in America.

And that the story we are telling, we need you to get at all costs.

And then coming then to "Zeke," that's saying like, whether or not you feel like you deserve to dream or not, whether the society has given you these messages that the dreams don't belong to you, guess what.
It does.
Building or following that evolution, or standing on the shoulders of William Dawson, in his composition of "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel," which of course is biblically based, but what I'm attempting to do is to harken back to like a field holler.
I'm attempting to harken back with ♪ The way in the middle ♪ ♪ It's in the middle of the, Way in the middle ♪ It's like a work song.

All of that was taken away.
So, everything that really comes out of that history is vocal.
It's vocal music.

And then the next line is, "I'm seeing things," right, and I can't stop from seeing them because they show up everywhere I go.
I think about that low chorus as being my ancestors.
"I've been here before."
"I know your name."
"I know your voice."
"I know the struggle."
"You're not alone."

They see it as, like, we are, like, 'preaching the gospel.'
And that's not really what this is for me.
This is the preservation of Black music in America and our way of life in this country.

And I guess I need to say that "My Soul" is really about the bigger piece of what it is for your soul to be anchored in something bigger than you.

What's so beautiful I think about Ken's words in this piece, is I wanted to be able to tell the story about being a kid and being young and queer and considering suicide.
Considering that my life wasn't enough, that I wasn't enough.
The Black boy prayer for me needed to be a message to my younger self.
♪ Ooooh ♪ [spoken word over singers] Love commands us to be careful To be careful of unclean hands That when we clap our hands to pray We pray to a God that listens to us That hears us, head bowed or knee bent Breathless Without the words Unable to breathe It holds us to the integrity of the hands that are used And to whose god those hands are prayed to Because not all hands are clean enough to pray for you And not all gods are godly enough to acknowledge enough The ambition required to hear you That you are worth your life without limits That you are deserving the bounty of your dreams, I pray I pray you learn the girth of your magic And control the wind with its weight I pray the sun you see, the stars you see Your soul it shines like them, I pray I pray your heart romantic for the fires you'd like to set And in all the rooms your heart to sooth I pray you set fire again I pray... That your dreams preferred are anchored Beside the hands that pray for you For the oil of your dreams Black Boy is not cheap The intentions of the hands that pray with you Must be clean Adrian: And when his piece is over, the way that those voices interlock, in unison and together, for me, signals the strength of what it is to hear a group of Black men sing together, which is something that I don't ever hear.
I could probably count on one hand the amount of times that I've heard a choir of Black men sing that way, in seven parts, you know, oohs and ahhs, from their hearts and from their souls.

Many of my pastors used to say, "God doesn't make junk."

Being able to own your strangeness, and really trying to reclaim the language that happens in that original version of "Strange Fruit" is to say that I'm strange and that's okay.
Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone, and these Black women, and the role that Black women played historically speaking, and to say, because of them, I am able to write this song today and to be able to reclaim that narrative that being strange is a good thing.

And why is it valuable that we understand the complexity of this music?
